The Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act of 2017 (HIRE Vets Act or the Act), signed by President Trump on May 5, 2017, requires the Secretary of Labor to establish a program, by rule, that recognizes employer efforts to recruit, employ, and retain veterans. Employer-applicants meeting criteria established in the rule will receive a “HIRE Vets Medallion Award.”
The Department of Labor is establishing this program under the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act, or HIRE Vets Act. President Donald J. Trump signed the Act into law May 5, 2017. Onramps to Careers is a non-profit business-education partnership that makes the educational on-ramps to technology jobs more attainable to youth in the Nation’s Capital. On-Ramps encourages youth and young adults to pursue I.T. education and career pathways that will lead to gainful employment or business ownership in the Washington D.C. Metro area. It provides employers with a reliable infrastructure to inspire students and shape the region’s future workforce. Our active board of business and education leaders work with our staff and school partners to create internships and work-based learning experiences.
The Task Force for Veterans’ Entrepreneurship (formerly Task Force, now known as VET-Force) was organized in early 1999 to advocate for the development and passage of Public Law 106-50, the Veterans’ Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development Act of 1999, wherein Congress recognized the United States must provide additional assistance to veterans, particularly service-disabled veterans, with creating and expanding their own small businesses, thereby assisting them to “realize the American dream that they fought so hard to protect.”
Since its founding on July 30, 1953, the U.S. Small Business Administration – Veteran’s Division has delivered millions of loans, loan guarantees, contracts, counseling sessions and other forms of assistance to small businesses. SBA was officially established in 1953, but its philosophy and mission began to take shape years earlier in a number of predecessor agencies, largely as a response to the pressures of the Great Depression and World War II.
